A breeder's dream, Lena's career has been simply
amazing. She is the top specialty winning English Springer Spaniel in
breed history with 36 Specialty Best in Show wins. She is one of the
top winning springer bitches of all time with TWELVE all-breed Best in
Show wins making her Number one in the breed and one of the Nation's top
sporting dogs for two years in a row. She won the National Specialty in
2001 and has a record of THREE wins at Westminster. Her last came at
age eight making it a most thrilling award.
Always breeder, owner-handled by Monica, it was such an honor sharing
it all with her.
We bred her in 2003 to our dream dog, Ch. ESSpecial Once in a Blu Moon. Madison had died several years prior, so this litter was the result of a surgical breeding with frozen semen. We thought the litter was lovely, but had no idea they would do the kind of winning they did and grow up to be the examples they are. Four of them finished at specialties. TWO of them were point winners at the National which was made even more thrilling because their sire accomplished the same thing.
In her retirement,
Lena continued to remind us daily what is
really important in life and in this sport. She was a competitive show
dog right up to the end winning Show Veteran of the Year at the Michigan
Fall Extravaganza in September 2007 along with winning the Veteran
Sweepstakes. At the National in October 2007, she placed 2nd her
Veteran Bitch class at eleven years of age. Her body may have
changed a bit with age, but her heart never, ever did. She was vibrant
and beautiful until the day she died. Every single thing I ever asked
of her, she did, except she did not live forever. There will never be
another one like her, but how did I get so lucky to have this ONE?
